What Counts as an Electrical Emergency?
An electrical emergency is a problem that could cause a fire, an electric shock or serious damage if it is left alone. Not every electrical fault is an emergency, but some symptoms should be treated as urgent until they have been checked.
Signs that may point to an urgent electrical problem include a burning or hot plastic smell from an outlet, switch or panel; sparks or scorch marks; an outlet or switch plate that feels hot; buzzing or crackling from the breaker panel; water near electrical equipment; and a breaker that trips again as soon as it is reset. A sudden loss of power to part of a home or business, while the rest still works, can also need prompt attention.
These signs do not always mean a dangerous fault, and one symptom alone cannot tell you the cause. They do mean the affected circuit should not be used normally until a qualified electrician has assessed it.
