An electrical panel may make a buzzing noise because of a loose connection, a breaker under strain, a heavy load or arcing inside the panel. A very faint hum can sometimes be normal, but a noticeable buzz, crackle or sizzle is a reason to have the panel checked by a qualified electrician.

The sound alone does not identify the exact problem, so it helps to know what to watch for.

Normal Sounds Versus Unusual Sounds

Electrical equipment can produce a very low, steady hum, especially when large loads are running. If you have to stand close to hear it and it never changes, it may not indicate a problem.

A buzz that you can hear from across the room, a sound that grows louder over time, or crackling, popping and sizzling noises are not normal. Sounds that come and go when a certain appliance runs, or that appear along with flickering lights, are also worth noting.

Possible Causes of Panel Buzzing

Loose connections are one of the more common concerns. When a wire or breaker does not make firm contact, electricity can arc across the gap, producing noise and heat. Over time, that heat can damage the breaker, the wire and the bus bar.

A breaker that is failing or not seated properly can also buzz, especially under load. Circuits that carry close to their limit for long periods may make the problem more noticeable. In some cases, the sound may come from equipment near the panel rather than from the panel itself. Moisture and corrosion on connections can also contribute.

Signs That Make It More Urgent

Treat buzzing as more urgent when it comes with a burning smell, a warm panel cover, scorch marks, breakers that trip or will not reset, or lights that dim or flicker throughout the home. These signs may indicate overheating.

If you see smoke, sparks or flames, leave the area and call 911. Do not open the panel, remove the cover, touch breakers or try to tighten anything. Panel components can carry dangerous current even when breakers are switched off.

Getting a Professional Diagnosis

An electrician will ask when the noise started, when it happens and what else you have noticed. The panel and its connections can then be checked with proper equipment to find the source, whether that is a breaker, a connection, the load on a circuit or something outside the panel. Noting when you hear the sound and what is running at the time helps narrow the cause.

Panels in older and newer Utah homes alike can develop loose connections, so a buzz should be taken seriously regardless of the panel’s age.
